In 2017, The Gertsburg Law Firm hostedA Brave New World: Strategic and Legal Issues for Today’s Non-Profitat Playhouse Square in Cleveland, Ohio. This lunch-and-learn seminar included a presentation on Crowdfunding by GLF attorney Nate Haskell. If you weren’t able to attend, we’d like to share his presentation with you.

What was covered in this talk:

We all hear a lot about crowdfunding and how much it can do for non-profits, but how much of that is hype, and what does it take to get a crowdfunding campaign in motion, let alone successful?  This session will cover the state of crowdfunding and some basic legal and logistical considerations for getting a campaign launched.  But most importantly, we’ll discuss the importance of “why” – for you, for your donors, and for your organization and its mission.  Takeaways will include:

  • Recent campaigns that were successful, and what factors contributed to that success;
  • Key legal, financial and logistical considerations for whether and how to launch a campaign, including terms and conditions of contracts with platforms and social media sites; and
  • Finding your “why,” and putting it to use in your branding and marketing, to put your organization and your campaign in the best position to succeed.

The first few minutes had a microphone issue. These are resolved at the 8:40 mark, if you would like to jump to that point. That is also the beginning of the PowerPoint slides, which can be downloaded here: Crowdfunding Presentation Slides
