March is Disability Awareness Month, and on 3/21 we observed World Down Syndrome Day (“3” copies of the “21st” chromosome – pretty clever, huh?). What does this have to do with Gertsburg Licata? Everything! We believe in the power of community and are committed to supporting organizations that elevate opportunities for everyone in our region.

For this month’s Founder’s Fix, I want to draw your attention to a local founder that I have immense respect for. Her name is Shari Hunter, and she is the founder of Two & Company, a non-profit organization in Chagrin Falls, Ohio that makes a significant impact on the lives of individuals with all different abilities. Two & Company is inspired by Shari’s son, Derek, who was born with Down syndrome. Shari and Derek did not let a diagnosis define their limitations. Derek graduated from Kent State in 2013 and lives independently with his wife. Shari and Derek inspire and train others through the Two Foundation. Whether you’re eating or shopping at the Two Café & Boutique, or participating in one of their several educational, fitness, or job training programs, you will feel connected to a greater purpose when you’re connected to the Two.

Two Café & Boutique’s mission is to provide full integration into the local workforce for individuals with exceptionalities. They bridge the gap between job seekers and local business partners, preparing, placing, and supporting their job seekers to ensure long-term success. Since 2015, they have been leasing space in Chagrin Falls, where they have been working tirelessly to help people of all abilities train and find meaningful employment.

I have had the privilege of getting to know Shari and can attest to her unwavering commitment to her cause. Her dedication, passion, and unrelenting spirit are truly inspiring, and her vision for Two Cafe & Boutique is nothing short of remarkable. Recently, Two Cafe & Boutique has launched a capital campaign to purchase an 8,000-square-foot building that will have space for their cafe, shops, offices, programs, and job training. The campaign’s purpose is to raise support for their mission of helping people of all abilities train and find meaningful employment. This is a win for everyone! Not only do people with differing abilities benefit from meaningful job training, experience, and opportunities, but studies have shown that employers who hire individuals with Down syndrome and other exceptionalities can benefit from increased employee loyalty, lower turnover rates, and improved morale among staff. Hiring individuals with different abilities can have a positive impact on businesses and the community as a whole.

We are excited to spread the word about Two & Company’s mission and their capital campaign launch. As a fellow entrepreneur and business owner, I understand the challenges that come with starting and growing a business. But what sets Two & Company apart is their commitment to making a difference in people’s lives, regardless of what the world perceives their abilities to be.

I urge you to join me in supporting Two & Company. Whether you can contribute financially or through visiting the cafe, your support will make a difference in the lives of so many. By supporting Two & Company, we are not only supporting the individuals they serve, but we are also building a better future for us all.
