Perfecting Your Morning Routine

BY ALEX GERTSBURG, ESQ.

Do you have a consistent morning routine? Are you looking for a new strategy to be productive? Pay close attention to the first thing you look at when you wake up. Whether it’s checking your e-mail, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, or the news you might realize you’re not being as proactive as you can be.

Try out this new method for the next three weeks. . .

A few years ago, on the advice of some badass entrepreneurs I really admire, I created a “Wake Up Playlist” on YouTube. It’s pre-stocked with a ton of videos from Simon Sinek, Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield, and (now) about a hundred others.  After a while, YouTube recommends other videos based on the ones you like. There are also creators out there who design motivational videos from these thinkers (check out the Mulligan Brothers and Motivation Madness) – so I add them to my Wake Up Playlist.

The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning when I’m getting ready or making my coffee is click Shuffle on my Wake Up Playlist. No e-mail, news, or social media before then.

There are a couple of things I notice from this. First, there’s a residual, lasting effect on my mood and mindset, and perspective that stays with me all morning, and if I pay attention to it and set some intentions from it, all day. Second, priority matters – I’m no longer pulled into other people’s problems and priorities and agendas. In fact, this move really delays and even eliminates the rabbit hole I’d go down before and during work.  It’s like a palate-cleanser that allows your palate to stay clean until you get to the office or later.

Give it a shot.

(On that note, I’ve got an ask for you: what’s your morning routine? I’m aggregating them from entrepreneurs, business leaders, and our community of Fix readers. If you’d like to contribute yours and possibly get a shout-out for you and your business in an upcoming Fix, please click here.

M&A Trends in the Private Insurance Broker Industry

BY MICHAEL CALLAM

There was a robust rate of mergers and acquisitions in the insurance brokerage sector in 2021, and the trend is expected to continue through 2022. While there were many successful deals last year, the one that got away—the megamerger of Aon and Willis Towers Watsonoffers predictive lessons of its own. And, with 2022 Q1 already in the rearview mirror, the current year’s trends are moving from the “predicted” to the “current” column.

A Look Back – Noteworthy Deals in 2021

In its 2022 Insurance M&A Outlook, Deloitte’s look back at 2021 began with the impressive 40 percent increase in total deal volume among underwriters and brokers. In the broker sector alone, the 802 transactions announced in 2021 reflected a 45 percent year-on-year increase compared to the 2020 total. In addition, the aggregate $10.9 billion deal value was almost double the average of the previous ten years. Among the reasons: Insurance brokers are more attractive than blocks of insurance business to aggregators and private equity firms because of the logistics for structuring a deal. And with the roster of insurance brokers closing deals expanding in 2021, the number of total deals had nowhere to go but up . . .
